Pride OSU Welcomes Newcomers to Thanksgiving Celebration

COLUMBUS, Ohio, Nov. 20, 2012-Pride OSU is geared up and ready to go for a new year as a new LGBTQ organization.

For lesbian, gay, bi-sexual, transgender, and questioning students looking for a sense of community on campus, Pride OSU is worth a look.

After breaking off from the national chapter of the Human Rights Campaign, the re-branded group is looking for new members.

“It helped give me a sense of community and knowing that I’m not alone,” said co-president Christian Goodrich, a junior, civil engineering major.

The group is also a good venue to find support regarding issues that straight people, even allies, can’t relate to.

“I like going to the meeting because even though I have a lot of straight friends that support me, there are certain things that they just can’t understand,” said John Sullivan, a sophomore in exploration.

The meetings, held Thursday nights at 8:30, have a different theme each week. Themes can range from personal health to politics and you can usually expect a guest speaker. The group has even made their own “It Gets Better” video, aimed at supporting LGBTQ youth.

As a new student group on campus, Goodrich said that Pride OSU would like to gain a larger volunteering presence and become more involved in the community.

Look for Pride OSU at the winter involvement fair or stop in to one of their meetings at the Union.

Gay Thanksgiving, the group’s holiday potluck, will be held Thursday, November 29 at 8 p.m. This is an open recruiting event and anyone interested in Pride OSU is welcome to join in the festivities.

If you would like more information about Pride OSU or would like the exact location of an upcoming meeting, contact  Christian or his c0-president Ryan Coleman. Both are available by email or during their office hours in room 3070 in the Ohio Union. Goodrich holds office hours Thursday from 6 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. and Coleman on Monday and Wednesday from 12:30 p.m. until 4:30 p.m.

You can also visit their website, Facebook page, or follow them on Twitter. To protect the identity of members still in the closet, the Facebook page is kept secret and you must be granted permission to join.
